[Comic and Show Spoilers] Theory/Prediction for how this conflict might end on the show

Disclaimer 1: This is pretty much my first time sharing a fan theory on the Internet, and a relatively long one too, so I'd appreciate it if you could go easy on me!

Disclaimer 2: For those of you who haven't read the comics and are worried about spoilers, please leave now.

Right, now that we've gotten that out of the way...

So I've got this theory that I've been pondering for the last couple of days, and it has to do with the end of the TV series' adaptation of the All Out War story arc, which the fanbase seems to agree will take place at the tailpiece of season 8. As many fans of the comic book series may know, Rick has a change of heart at the end of his war with the saviours, and instead of killing Negan, he decides to go against his better judgement and lock him up.

Why does he do this?

Well, in the comics, his motive is to prove Negan wrong on an ideological level. That is, to show him that there is a better and far more sophisticated way of rebuilding society than by subjugating and ruling others through fear. In other words, Rick wants Negan to watch his dictatorial community crumble, as a unifying democracy takes its place.

Will Rick's actions differ on the show? Yes... and no. Let me explain.

You see, many of the fan theories on the internet predicting the end of All Out War share a common detail: Rick killing Negan. A particularly interesting theory states that Rick will hang him, and hey, I can totally see that happening. Not only do I say this because I'm open to other people's ideas, but also because it fits Rick's character. This is a guy who is known to deliver on his promises, and we've seen this before. Remember Gareth, the cannibal from season 5? What was Rick’s promise to him? I believe it was to use a machete with a red handle to kill him. Ultimately, he was a man of his word. By that logic, we can assume that Rick will inflict a similar fate upon Negan. After all, he did make a vow to kill him… someday. But he won’t. Rick is not going to kill Negan on the show, but for a different reason.

Morgan’s death.

My theory is that Morgan is going to die before the end of All Out War, and I’m placing my bet on his death taking place around the time of Negan’s final attack on the Hilltop, which involves the use of weapons drenched in walker blood. As we all know, the Morgan on the show drastically differs from the Morgan in the comics. As a quick refresher, comic book Morgan never learned Akido, or the art of peace, and he died fairly quickly after he was reintroduced to the group; he was bitten during the walker raid on Alexandria, and shortly thereafter succumbed to infection, which took place well before the group even knew about the saviours. In all honesty, he was pretty much a minor character who just happened to be in the background, shying away from adding anything to the story. However, AMC Morgan has a far more significant role in the story. While this Morgan survived the walker raid in season 6, I believe that if he does end up getting killed off, and he will, his cause of death will mirror the one he received in the comics, albeit under different circumstances. In the show, he will probably get stabbed by a knife coated in walker blood, and die of infection at the end of a 90-minute episode interspersed with commercials and emotional filler.

This will change Rick, to some extent. I believe that he will think back to his past interactions with Morgan. And no, not the crazy, “clear” Morgan, but the lover of peace and human life. More specifically, Rick will recall something resonant that Morgan once told him: “Everything gets a return.” Put two and two together, and you’d probably guess that Rick will apply this philosophy to determine Negan's fate. Why? To honour his friend’s memory.

At the end of the day…

Rick will nevertheless fulfill his vow to Negan. He will kill him, just not in the way that you think. I believe that Rick will find solace in knowing that he has lowered Negan to a level where literally everything that he once had and knew is now gone. The saviours, the sanctuary, and above all: his authority. Remember, “we are all Negan?” Yeah, neither do I. Negan is dead, and Rick has indeed killed him, but the egotistical prick that bashed Glenn’s head into a pizza has now been locked away in a dark cell, because Rick has decided to give this guy another shot. He has chosen to reconcile with Hershel’s philosophy, that “you get to come back.” He has chosen to believe that no matter how irreparable both man and society may seem in the apocalypse, “everything gets a return.”

So…

That’s my spiel! I hope you guys enjoyed it, and sorry, I haven’t got a potato with me today (if you understood that reference, good on you). But… let me know what you guys thought of this theory! How do YOU guys think that All Out War is going to end on the show? Feel free to discuss :)
