I've been re-watching LOST, and it always gets to me how horrible Michael's backstory is. He loved his girlfriend (Susan) and they are about to have a kid (Walt). Michael jokes around with Susan and says that Susan didn't want to marry Michael so that Walt would have her last name. On the surface, Michaels just messing around, but it's noted from this that Susan is the reason they aren't married.
After Walt is born, Susan and Michael start having troubles in their relationship. At some point, Susan gets a job in Amsterdam and decides to move. Without Michael having any decision, Susan takes their son with her.
A while later, Susan tells Michael that she found somebody else (Brian) and they are moving to Australia together. Throughout this time, she decides it's best not to have Michael visit Walt or have him in his life. A bit later, she tried getting Michael to sign Walt over so that Brian can adopt him.
So Michael, who at one point loved Susan and was going to be a good father to his son, had that all taken away from him without much choice because it's what Susan decided.
And to add on to all of that, it's revealed after the crash (it's LOST...there's kind of like this whole plane crash thing going on) that Michael was constantly sending letters and art to Walt that Susan kept hidden away from him.
This entire time that Michael was trying to be a good father, even after everything Susan put him through, was still for nothing because she didn't want him in Walts life in any way.
I know this is probably a weird post to make, but I just felt like making it anyways. Michael's backstory seems really heartbreaking to me, and even when the show was airing I didn't see many people talking about it.
