Rick and the Scavengers

Let me preface this post by saying I haven't finished season 7 yet. I'm on around episode 12.

Rick has made a deal with these scavengers - and he and Michonne have just found a hell of a lot of guns at a fairground which collapsed, and was originally intended to be a safe zone.

iirc they find about 60 guns and they just hand them over to the Scavengers - I get Rick made a deal with them but does it not seem a bit naive of Rick?

The Scavengers seemingly do not know of Negan, but they haven't even investigated this group. Rick promises them guns and they just agree to fight a random fight for Rick?! He hands them 60 guns and they say they need more. For all I know Rick could go and fetch them 100+ guns, hand them over again and the Scavengers could just say "thanks for that, We're going to go and do a Negan and take all your shit now we have weapons". I mean their motto is "we take, we don't bother". They waited for Rick to get those supplies from the house in the lake. What's to say they're not just using Rick?

I guess my question is why does Rick trust these strangers without so much as a background check? Is it pure desperation on Rick's part? Or is it just him being naive?
