Like many of the people on this subreddit have, I've also been rewatching the show in anticipation of Season 7. I caught something this time that I hadn't before, which really lays the ground for one of the most interesting parallels in the series: Jon Snow, and Jaime Lannister.
I feel like structurally, these characters are setup in the series to be almost exact polar opposites- White Cloak of the Kingsguard, Black Cloak of the Nightswatch. Jaime chose love over Duty, Jon chose duty over Love. Jaime was heir to one of the most wealthy and powerful houses in Westeros before taking his vows, Jon was a bastard who stood to inherit nothing. Where Jaime is cynical and bitter after a career of serving his brotherhood, Jon remains true to his station and his vows (until he dies and is honorably released from them)
Despite all of this, there are also many similarities between them: Both are squired by the Lord Commander of their order- Barristan Selmy and Jeor Mormont. As squires both assist in military missions to suppress a guerilla force- Wildlings and the Kingswood Brotherhood (book only), which ultimately lead both to become skeptical and distrustful of "the established order". Both are eventually appointed and serve under the title of "Lord Commander."
Now where it gets really interesting, and you start freaking out during a rewatch. In Season 2 when Jaime is captured by the Northern army, he challenges Robb Stark to single combat
In season 6 we see nearly the same interaction, which is morally and emotionally completely flipped on its head, Jon Challenges Ramsay to single combat
I have a feeling that these two will meet again, but until then...
