I'm a little late to the party, I know. I'm terrible at watching TV shows. I don't enjoy most TV and I frankly have a miserable attention span when it comes to dramas. For the past few years, I really haven't understood the hype behind this alleged wave of innovation that's coming from television. Every big, critically acclaimed "masterpiece" that I hear about frankly bores me to tears and whenever people mention them, I simply do not understand the appeal or praise that they get.
About a week ago, I decided on a whim to watch Broadchurch. I had seen it floating around on Netflix for a little while and decided to give it a shot. I love David Tennant and Olivia Colman, so I thought that even if I didn't enjoy the story all that much, I could still enjoy watching those two.
Frankly, wow. The show was unpretentious, gripping, and strangely enough, simple. There was no flash or attempt to portray this show as anything but a very emotional crime drama and it just clicked for me. Never at any point of the season was I poking holes in the plot or having my belief in the drama shattered by overly fictitious elements. It was just... good. I don't really know what else to say.
