Somehow Gavin has become the most interesting, complex character to me, and he’s tragically underused. There’s conflict in him about the nasty methods that so many of the saviors use, but from his perspective the saviors may also seem like the good guys compared to the survivors (who did preemptively kill Paula and her people.)
The writers really succeed at writing this character, while I think they’ve dropped the ball on previously interesting characters like Daryl and Morgan (Daryl used to be a conflicted, maturing redneck, but that growth seems to have plateaued and now he’s a perpetually cynical hardass. Morgan was interesting when he had his “don’t kill” philosophy, but he quickly flip-flopped without any clear development.)
I suspect Gavin will die in the second half of this season, which seems like a waste to me. It’s a bummer when a secondary antagonist is more brilliantly written and portrayed than any of the main cast.
