We should have seen multiple families/people/groups in separate stories. We would see how different people/places fared in the collapse of civilization and the new threat of corpses coming back to eat people. We would see each group lose everything in varying situations until a few from each story somehow come together to form the group of strangers that would now journey through the new world together.
