Past a point, why did Walt even need Jesse?

Early on, Walt needs Jesse because he knows the business. But after a while, like once he starts working for Gus, the business side of things is pretty much taken care of. So why does Walt keep trying to hard to keep Jesse on his side? Because Jesse does what he says? He seems to think of Jesse as more of a liability.
