The heartbreaking but superb choice of flashback opening in Ozymandias

Ozymandias is the episode where everything comes crashing down. It captures the true disintegration of the White and Schrader families and signifies an end to Heisenberg. It is my favourite episode and a brutal, unforgiving, emotional and fitting way to start the final couple of hours of the greatest TV show ever made.

The opening scene, taking us briefly back to when things were 'normal', sets us up for the horrors that follow and primes our emotions to make the next hour all the more tragic. Walt with hair and moustache, reminds us of the unassuming, relatively plain man he used to be, unweathered by the weight of his actions or ravaged by cancer. Jesse, plays with a stick after one of his typically rebellious arguments with Walt. Walt looks back, rolls his eyes. Another one of his students, a harmless idiot goofing off. And his phone call with Skyler - a tender moment, familial but unremarkable chit-chat, punctuated with Walt's first major lie to his wife, and the name of his daughter. It's lighthearted but heartbreaking, funny but bittersweet. Walt's tightie-whities giving us a fleeting smile in the midst of utter chaos. Look at how things used to be, and how much we have lost - and will lose. From memory that was the last time Walt and Skyler tell each other they love one another. A vital and intimate part of family strength, moments before we witness the complete implosion of Walt's.

This post isn't a revelation by any means, but having seen BB through 3-4 times now, I can't help but continue to rave about the show and this episode in particular. As far as intros go, this is perfect. Bravo Vince.
