TL;DR We'll have three tags - [No Spoilers] / [Official] / [Leaks]
Back in the day
In early seasons, book readers and show watchers had their own discussions. Now, with the show surpassing the books, you'll notice very few people use the book tags. The divide is between people who have read leaks/production spoilers for the upcoming seasons and those who avoid them. We want to simplify the system to protect people from spoilers.
What's changing?
We'll have three scopes.
- [No Spoilers] - For new watchers or those who are wary.
- [Official] - Basically everything, be it fan art or official casting news. Does not include production rumors/news or unofficial paparazzi photos. No leaked info will be allowed in these posts, full stop.
- [Leaks] - News sites now often report on what's been spotted on set. Fans even crawl over Spanish mountain ranges to get a peak. Thus, to protect fans who want to go in unspoiled and to accommodate others who like spoilers, we have [Leaks]. For obvious reasons, we will be extremely strict on title and thumbnail spoilers, and they will be reviewed by a mod before going live.
If, for example, you're avoiding trailers, just specify it in the body text of your post and we'll send any criminals to the Wall. The same principle applies to any other specific scope you want to set.
Why the changes?
More and more Reddit users are on mobile and don't seek out the detailed spoiler guide – for understandable reasons. We wanted three tags that are intuitive just from seeing them on the front page. [Official] was the most popular result in our survey for replacing what used to be [Everything]. We think it's a good word to highlight to users that leaks are not okay in those posts.
The way fans and the media interact with GoT has evolved, so the tags need to keep up. The sub isn't actually changing its stance on leaks much, but is definitely making it clearer. Basically, we're making these changes because we want to keep the average watcher unspoiled.
When are the changes?
The tags are active now, but the old tags will work for a week after this post goes live. Then we'll be using the new system alone.
And finally
We're very much open to questions/suggestions in this post. We think we're basing this on what users want, but it's always a little hard to tell even with all our meta surveys (and thanks again for all the responses). It's a long Winter, but an important one.
