Question about the army/militia/faction that Jake and Troy are a part of

So at the end of season two we see Nick and Luciana lead the members of the Colonia to the Mexico/US border only to be met by some military force with firearms- We see season 3 open with Travis, Alicia and Madison encounter these same men all to be taken to the outpost where we meet Troy then Jake -

My question is was this the official US Army? It seemed like a legit military base (can see a few "support our troops" posters in the room Troy puts Alicia and Madison in) It was believable but then when they get to Broke Jaw Ranch it seemed like the other guys there were more of a militia then the army?

Did Otto and the other founder of the Ranch pre -plan and have their sons enlist in the army? They also had a helicopter and other things but seemed a bit confusing when they got to the ranch
