Why the hell did they decide to delete this episode? It was a great way of foreshadowing what's going to happen in Season 2; Shane's descent into madness. Jon Bernthal explains that after the CDC event, Shane's Jeep runs out of gas and he was left behind and forced to defend himself against a horde of zombies, despite yelling for help. It put Shane in a him versus the world type of situation. He felt helpless and abandoned at that moment. It added another layer to his character which later led him to make the decision that was his ultimate demise at the end of Season 2. He wanted to challenge Rick's 'weak' leadership so the only people he cared about, Carl and Lori, would never be put in the type of situation he was in.
