Werner got himself killed because he was convinced there was no such thing as an unforgivable mistake. He thought being in Mike's good side was a carte blanche, and he ended up regretting it.
The rest of the episode is about Jimmy turning his suspicions into a full-on belief that there is no such thing as forgiveness in the world, at least for people like him. Once people think you're a fuckup, that's all you are in their eyes, and then you have to fight them if you want anything for yourself.
