I was hesitant to read the show spoilers but my will to see the fate of Rick was just too strong lol. I fell into the camp of wanting to see him written out rather than straight up killed. Just too invested in Rick and Andy to see him leave forever.
I’m a fan of what they are going to do though and personally really looking forward to seeing the future of the show. (Bravo Angela Kang!)
I had a thought about a future plot though.
In the comics when the group finally meet the commonwealth, there is a story involving Michonne finding her lost daughter (?) I believe. Haven’t read it fully but I know there’s an emotional meeting for her.
Now presuming the commonwealth are responsible for taking Rick and Anna (or even if there not), I could see them using that emotional beat and story line as a way to bring Rick back into the show.
It would parallel the comic in a way they like to do, plus it would make more sense in the world that the show has built. Michonne just bumping into one of her family would seem like lazy writing I feel, but bumping into Rick after a few years? That would be much better.
It gives Andy some time away and gives AMC an ace in the hole for a big “oh shit” moment should they need one. I’m thinking along the lines of the Merle return in season 3.
It’s clear to me at least that neither Andy or AMC wanted to see Ricks character end, but leave it open should Andy have a strong urge to come back. And I honestly think he will eventually, even in a cameo role maybe. But at the same time, even if he doesn’t it leaves us wondering where Rick is and his fate.
All in all I dig the move, they couldn’t get away from Andy wanting to leave, and I think they have handled it well. Much better than Chandlers situation at least.
