Now that the first 3 seasons of The Expanse are all on Amazon Prime (with the fourth season set to be produced by Amazon), I’m sure that a lot more folks have it on their radar. If you’re curious about jumping in, allow me (and whoever else wants to discuss the series) to give you a little push over the edge!
The Expanse takes place a couple centuries from our present, when mankind has established colonies on the moon, Mars, and on several asteroids. After several generations of this off-earth expansion, the humans who have lived their entire lives on Mars, or within the asteroid belt (‘belters’), no longer identify as ‘earthlings’. They feel exploited by earth, and have sought independence. The tension has nearly led to war throughout the solar system.
The story begins with one belter’s investigation into a relatively small-time murder. The mystery he unravels just gets bigger and bigger.
When an extremely dangerous new weapon begins wrecking havoc in the belt, all parties blame their rivals. It’s clearly a weapon harnessed by one or several human parties. But what’s unclear is what the nature of this weapon is, or it’s origin. And what does it have to do with the murder investigation in the belt?
This is where the series begins. And if you think that this is a strong setup, I can promise you that things only escalate from there.
The hard sell would be to say that The Expanse is a strong contender for ‘best sci fi tv show of all time’. If you tend to be attracted to science fiction, in general, absolutely watch this show (or consider reading the books it is based on). But in any event, this series is subtle and nuanced to a point where the entire solar system feels extraordinarily real. The world building is top class, as is each new major development that pushes and tests the entire fragile solar system of fractured humanity.
