Well well. A worthwhile Netflix series I've actually had the honors of watching from the very beginning 2 years back. Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel Hammond (Timothy Olymphant), a realtor couple with one child, get to dig in an undead territory after Sheila has a bad food experience and vomits out a brain looking tumor, later called Mr. Ball Legs. What... Alright, how about this one? Alright, so Sheila and Joel have one child named Abby (Liv Hewson) who eventually helps out with their plotting schemes, in spite of being an otherwise ordinary, average suburban couple. Abby also befriends a neighbor's son Eric, who fits in nicely as a geeky student, helping with Hammond's plots of what's to come.
Barrymore's happy-go-cannibal undead Sheila and Olyphant's awkwardly nervous and neurotic Joel make for a pretty unique couple. And I'm especially glad that Timothy got this role, since I've only seen him in a handful of decent films (Hitman, the rest is in the fog...) Yeah, this is the one for him, for sure. Since this show it comes out only once a year, it may be hard to remember what happened in the previous season, but trust me: this will stick with you if you have some stomach. So yeah, as a fair warning, it is a gross show, including: mutilation, putrefaction of human body, calculated murder but with comic relief coming with moral excuses for it and cannibalism. There's also a sit-com -like ability to change from dramatic tension to total relief. So the plot twists happen fast, but never failing in deliverance. It's not too serious to begin with, but I'd say it can be screwed up, if the writers were incompetent, which they aren't, imo.
Just for entertainment purposes practicing within the range of pure black horror comedy, this is a real treat for horror fans. Also having seen Ash vs. Evil Dead, for me, that one doesn't come even close to this for me simply due to to its well... idiocy. It's not a bad show, but while Ash vs. Evil Dead as a fair comparison to this and a competitor show of sorts, doesn't come nearly with as much wit, and is just brainless random fun for the most part. Granted, Santa Clarita Diet isn't a perfect show (it's silly) but what i'm saying is, that its greatness doesn't come from already set values and prestige, but the way it carries itself and delivers. It's an original and growing show with definite potential for a minor cult following. Santa Clarita Diet seems underappreciated, and while Ash vs. Evil Dead already has a cult following, just for the sake of 80s random demon hack 'n' slash humor, this one stands out more for me. This is not to bash the classic Evil Dead movies, but if you were to pick either Ash vs. Evil Dead or Santa Clarita Diet for a horror show comedy, I'd go with this one. Santa Clarita Diet quality-wise, first and foremost, isn't perhaps even intended to be "top tier". It's understandable considering the genre, but it's ambitious in its own way. So far it has delivered out of sheer creative input of the writers and actors, a totally solid and especially consistent and original zany show. An eight out of 10 in the very least for me.
