I feel like when people look back at season 9, this will be seen as a filler or a skippable episode. That’s a shame because the writing in this episode was so thorough and well done.
Before watching this episode, Lydia was just some crazy, dangerous girl I didn’t care about. The writing in this episode helped express Lydia’s character in such a detailed manner that by after watching, she gained all of my sympathy, and it felt like I knew her more than other characters like Ezekiel or Aaron.
The introduction of Alpha is another example. It tricked you into thinking Alpha would gradually turn into a monster from the supposed “angelic” mother she was in the beginning of the episode. When you realize that arc has holes in it, you get a bit confused, then it all makes sense at the end when it was revealed that Alpha had lied about it to Lydia. That misconception helps express how twisted and evil Alpha is. If that’s not a creative and brilliant way to write in a new villain I don’t know what is.
Nevertheless, this episode laid the foundations for the rest of the plot 9b by introducing Alpha and Lydia with its amazing writing
