Wow. I don’t even know what to say.
I hated chuck. More than any other fictional character probably. And the ending has left me so incredibly divided. It’s partly because I can’t understand his mental illness for the life of me.
I truly pity chuck. His mental illness was a cancer to him and no one should have to go through that. However, a mental illness does not excuse many of the things he has said/done. He wasn’t born evil. But I truly believe his hate/ugliness for his brother was REAL. It was quite possibly the most definitive thing about his character. And for that, I can only pity him.
Some of the things he said to his brother was some of the most disgusting examples of verbal abuse I’ve seen directed towards a person. Chuck does not get a pass for that because of his condition/illness, whatever the hell it was (we never had a good definition or diagnosis).
But if chuck really did just kill himself, then I think all characters involved in his life should also take a long look at their decisions in terms of getting chuck treatment. From the very beginning of the show, jimmy and Howard treated committing chuck to a mental hospital as a personal business move (I think Howard claimed jimmy would inherit the partnership or something). Instead, chuck missed out on a chance to get better so shame on jimmy and Howard.
However, I truly believe jimmy is a good guy with a good heart. He doesn’t take the blame for chuck’s suicide. The thing that makes me so mad is that you can’t tell when chuck is and isn’t in the right mind. The verbal attacks he made on jimmy felt so real and deeply rooted that it’s almost impossible to think that he said those things due to an illness.
Can you tell I’m torn here? And Jesus man, what a brutal way to go out. So disturbing. I’m not ready for season 4.
