I know he's a big villain and I'm not debating that, he's not a good guy, and he's definitely dangerous. Right near the end of season 2 and yeah Shane had gone off the deep end more than once. (Otis, the barn, assaulting Lori etc.)
I'm watching this and I realise that early on Shane has a point! Yes a little girl was missing at the time and he seemed unempathetic but people were suffering. Carl was shot, Daryl got an arrow through his stomach, and more!
Shane was saying they should all cut there losses and stop looking before more people get hurt, and I actually think that's a great point.
Furthermore everyone seems to forget that he's constantly around the woman he has a thing for and he's constantly seeing her with another man and he accepts it. That's a hard thing to do.
He truly loves Carl and Lori, (more in a messed up way with Lori) but Lori keeps having a go at him because he said Shane was dead. That's just it though, he wasn't lying! He really thought Shane was dead!
He's still a villain, he's still a bad person, but he had a point and was scrutinized over the belief that Shane was dead which he really did believe at the time. Still really scummy to go after your best friends wife ugh
