Just binged all 10 episodes over the last few hours or so and damn, it was awesome. After being a little underwhelmed with season 2, I was hoping that they'd have a return to form to the heights of season 1, and imo, not only is it a ton better than the 2nd season, it might be better than the first as well.
First and foremost, the show goes back to what made S1 to good - the emotional core being the relationship between Johnny and Miguel. They have a lot of screen time together and their interactions are a joy to watch, even when they're just shooting the shit.
The Johnny and Daniel relationship also develops a lot this season, with their enmity and hostility slowly growing into grudging respect. It was the necessary move as them being at each other's throats all the time was getting a little old
There are a lot of old faces that show up, and there's definitely a ton more nostalgia-baiting in this one than in seasons past. But it all works for the better, and drives the core theme of the season, which is how our past defines us and how you can or cannot move on from it.
There's thankfully much less of the teen melodrama this time around. Sam is more tolerable and while robby still sucks, he isn't in these episodes as much as last season.
The show also fleshed out Kreese a lot more this time around, and gave us an understanding of why he is the way he is. While it still doesn't make him any more likable or sympathetic, you at least understand why he become the cruel, empathy-free tyrant he is today.
Therea actually surprisingly little karate action this time around, as the focus continues to be more on the character arcs and developing them as people. I found this season slower paced than the first 2 - but again, it's to the shows benefit. And while it's by no means grim or bleak, it's definitely a little darker and heavier than the first two seasons.
The final episode does have another awesome all-out brawl though and it sets up season 4 really nicely.
All in all, I'm extremely pleased with how s3 turned out, and can't wait for the next one
