For anyone interested in learning any what "the valley of death" was.

Pope references "the valley of death" during his and his crew's time in Afghanistan, and it's actually a real life place.

The Korengal Valley in Afghanistan was at one point in the last decade considered to be the most dangerous place on Earth for humans. The valley is situated between Afghanistan and Pakistan where the Taliban and foreign fighters used the vast terrain to move in and out of the country. The US Army and coalition forces set up outposts in this valley that saw so much combat that they were studied. They even managed to have as many combat hours as soldiers who fought in the worst battles of the Italian campaign in WW2. The combination of mountainous terrain, foreign fighters fully in their element, civilian villages giving aid to said enemy, and some outposts being situated by higher ups in the least defensible places possible made it an extremely violent battlefield day to day. So it says a lot about Pope's remaining team, and what they survived up to that point.
