The kids had his childhood stripped away from him, he believed that his dad had been shot and killed for a good few months, he lost his only other child friend (then saw her as a zombie and then his dad shot her in the head in front of him), he witnessed a scientist and one of the other group members choose to take their own lives (let's keep in mind he's only like 9 at this point), he saw a deer that he wanted to pet but ended up with it being shot in front of him and him being shot in the process as well, he's witnessed a friendly farmer be beheaded in front of him, he helped his mother deliver his sister (that wasn't even his actual dads daughter) and then watch his mother die as she gave birth and then he had to shoot her in the head, he saw a lot of people slaughtered and eaten to death, he was built up to believe they had found salvation only for it to just be a bunch of unfriendly cannibals, he then had to try make new friends at some shite place he didn't like, he saw the woman his dad was falling in love with get her neck bit into and then watched his dad cut her arm off as her son was getting eaten to death off at the side, he then was shot in the eye (completely fucking blinding him in one eye and possibly giving him a little brain damage) then he watched two of the group members get their skulls completely bashed in, and to top it all off he had to sing a song in front of the man that made his dad his bitch.
