Sorry I know Ozark isn't a topic of discussion anymore, I've actually been meaning to post this for like 3 weeks now but I'm late as fuck on this one I guess. So amma just be as straightforward as I can here:
I do understand why some didn't like Ozark, plot-wise it wasn't really offering anything new. There's some originality there, but this is a story most of us have seen something like before whether on a TV series or movie. I say Ozark's originality (and my enjoyment from watching this) stems from the approach it took to telling a story that has already been told. It was direct and to-the-point. It's almost like the show was saying "Hey you already know what's coming so let's not waste anytime with it, maybe in the later episodes we'll find something new to throw at you". I especially liked how they avoided certain TV Drama 'cliche', that became cliches only because we've seen writers take that approach way too often. It's almost like it was doing the exact opposite of what most shows would do at some points. I don't think this counts as creative, but it was sure as hell engaging.

There wasn't any secret keeping. The main character's 'conflict' wasn't kept hidden from his wife and kids. No constant lying, no 'wife getting upset because she does know where her husband is' and all that crap.
-
The kids were involved. And I especially loved this. I loved that the show didn't kept them in the background. The scene at the end of episode 2 where the mom just tells them straight up "Your father is laundering money for the Mexican cartel" was quite surprising to me. Wendy and Martin thinking Jonah was some kind of a psychopath and not knowing how to approach him about it was one of the best moments of the season. Charlotte losing her virginity to some rich asshole who didn't give one fuck about fucking a 15 year old was one of the the season's most jarring scenes (but in a good way). Charlotte was annoying asf at times but even so, she, Jonah and Ruth were the 3 characters I enjoyed the most on this thing.

The main character even though he was smart, wasn't nerdy/eccentric in anyway. That's another cliche they avoided as writers have a tendency of making smart guys street idiots. Marty was a confident badass throughout most of this season (and his son was a badass too lol). I especially loved the scene where the Langmores had his money and he just walked up straight to 'em bitches and talked his way into getting his money back. I feel if it was any other show the main character would try to steal it back from them.
And there's more I liked about Ozark as well:
-
Julia Garner gave a great performance. She's the reason I started watching this (though I probably would've anyways, but seeing her on the casting list did get me hyped). The acting all round was quite good.
-
Cinematography was great too, many beautiful and well-shot scenes (lakeside views and whatnot), though as the season progressed the less of these scenes we saw. Once you get used to the blue tint (which I'm certain many people didn't even notice), Ozark is a very beautiful show.
Just for these reasons I think this show is 'outstanding', but I can't predict its fate for future seasons. It's direct, it's up-to-date and it's occasionally thrilling. Another reason some disliked it was probably because of plot pacing. But it's 2017 man who gives a fuck about pacing. Place Ozark between Patriots and Harlots to being one of the best new shows of 2017
