Walt could have avoided a lot of questioning from Skyler if he had simply told her he was no longer teaching and had landed another job in a lab with irregular scheduling.

He could even prove it to her by taking selfies if needed. She wouldn't know what any of that equipment was for. Instead he didn't have this new job idea and tried to be slick... which he was horrible at. As far as answering for all the cash he could have told her he preferred his employer pay him in cash so he could have more take-home money for his family after his death.
