A lot of people theorized that Negan's wives were gonna rat Eugene out and I still think it's possible. My guess is that, after Eugene let Gabriel and Carson go, Negan is going to be very suspicious of Eugene and if the wives go through with it, Eugene is going to try and lie his ass off. Negan, being the sociopath he is, will force Eugene into the coffin before the final confrontation with Rick. He tells him he'll be back and if Eugene died of suffocation, he'll apologize, but if he's alive, Negan will kill him for giving Sasha the pills. If they go the comic route, Negan will no longer be the leader, unbeknownst to Eugene. So when the war is over, Eugene will hear footsteps coming near the coffin, fearing his life is coming to an end. The coffin opens and it's Dwight or others from the group telling him Negan had been defeated.
I don't like how much Eugene has been siding with Negan this season, but if we're ever to get a redemption arc, this would probably be the best case scenario for what they wrote around him.
