For me Game of Thrones feels like a successor to Lost and Battlestar Galactica, two hugely successful shows that proved that genre shows could have the serialization aspects of the post Sopranos age and be just as critically acclaimed as the best dramas on HBO or FX at that time. Just like Game of Thrones, these two shows had massive followings which dissected every episode and produced massive discussion and theorizing about every little detail in the show. Just like Game of Thrones, both of them had backlashes in the middle of their run with many people complaining that the show wasn't as good as it was in it's earlier seasons or that the show mistreated a character.
Since Game of Thrones is so popular now, not everyone will agree with the shows ending. I expect a massive backlash similar to the ones that Lost and BSG received at the end of their finales with a lot of fans complaining that they weren't given all the answers or some other problem. What do you think?
(Also one more thing. I do believe that X Files, Buffy , The Prisoner and Twilight Zone were just as important for genre television as Lost and BSG. It's just that none of these are particularly as serialized as these two nor did they exist in a time where every episode would be dissected online in a matter of minutes)
