I think the first time I watched this series I just didn't pay attention to it because I was rooting for him. But now that I've seen it all once before, I'm realizing on my rewatch what a total ass he is to everyone around him. It's really jarring to see how badly he manipulated everyone around him and how arrogant he was. He deserved bad IMO. He was horrible.
