Disclaimer: If you don't remember, S1 is like 5% porno (Oh my god, LFs "play with her ass" scene is soo unnecessary). This strategy definitely worked but my mom and I are pretty comfortable, it could be awkward if you're not.
We watched season 1 last week. I chose to lead her through it a bit, I pointed out some of the significant points that any first time viewer might miss but left out the spoilery details (ex. after the illyrio/varys/arya scene in the dungeon, I made sure she recognized varys) and I think this was a good thing. I knew she was hooked on episode 3 or 4, when she asked "So how many seasons of this are there?"
Episode 5ish I asked who her favorite characters were, she said "Khaleesi" and Jon Snow, and she liked Ned. Arya made the list by the end of the season too.
Her reaction to e9 was pretty standard, "Didn't see that coming at all". Sometime during his imprisonment I asked for predictions and she was thinking that maybe Daenerys would come over and rescue him, lol. Sweet summer mother. After 10 she admitted she was hooked. I asked her thoughts on what she got vs what she expected, her answer was "the complexity". This is why I think that my explaining simple things was beneficial, as the complexity can go straight overhead if you let it.
Today we watched through episode 7 of s2. She wasn't fooled at all by the burnt bodies. After ep 6 where the dragons are stolen, she theorized that the dragons might grow up but still recognize her as their mother when grown. She just now texted "I knew it wasn't the two little Stark boys that were burned! :D"
Trying to think if I can arrange for watching the Red Wedding with her, without setting off any alarms. Doubt it unfortunately.
So, yeah, I'm sure a lot of you out there with parents you actually like are in the same situation, I figured I'd share, 10/10 can confirm this works.
