So, I was considering who was going to wield Heartsbane (why Randyll Tarly didn't send men after Sam after Heartsbane went missing is beyond me) and I've considered the likely candidates are either Brienne or the Hound. But who wields Heartsbane is irrelevant, I was just thinking if the Hound will be eliminated from being a candidate for who wields Heartsbane and then it got me thinking, I don't think the Hound is going to survive. But how is he going to die?
I thought about how King's Landing is very likely going to be used as a weapon/bomb against the AOTD and then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Someone is going to need to light the fuse. The Hound hates fire (maybe that's why he hates gingers?) because of how Gregor pressed him up against the fire like a steak. The show repeatedly shows his fear for fire. How poetic would it be for the Hound to go out in the way that overcame his deepest fear and to become a hero? I mean after Cleganebowl, his brother would be dead and his hate will no longer fuel him to need to live.
And sure enough, I search around for evidence to back up this before I clinged onto this idea and who else but Beric fucking Dundarrion implying the Hound going out in flames.
Beric Dondarrion sentences the Hound to trial by combat for abandoning the King's Guard. The Hound and Beric fight, to which the Hound cuts Beric down and Beric is killed.
After this, Arya, mad at the Hound killing Mycah, springs up with a knife and charges at the Hound, trying to kill him. Someone grabs Arya and:
Arya: NO! LET ME GO!
Hound: Looks like the god likes me more than your butcher's boy!
Arya: BURN IN HELL!!
Beric (arisen from the dead): He will.
cues Lord of Light music
Beric: But not today
