Watching seasons 8 again last week and reading the comics again this summer made me realise how similar are these two besides the facts that they both use a crossbow, both of them deeply hating the Saviors &Negan and both being Rick's right man hand at that time in the stories:
•Both of them are questioning Rick's leadership:
-Dwight after the events of volume 28 (Sherry's accidental death by Rick, Rick letting Negan out, and Rick trusting the Saviors again).
-Daryl in S8E5 for Rick not putting his people first, with an upcoming climax in season 9.
•Both of them are not showing mercy or remorse when the enemy is begging for his life:
-Dwight executing the Whisperer in front of the Militia.
-Daryl executing the Savior boy from Regina's outpost in front of Rick.
•Both of them are having a hard time forgiving themselves or other people:
-Dwight's blaming himself for how things turned with him and Sherry since Negan arrived in their life even that Laura told him it was not his fault and he's having a hard time forgiving Rick after he killed Sherry.
-Daryl is blaming himself for Glenn's death even after Maggie told him it was not his fault and he's having a hard time forgiving tv Dwight for his trust and good intentions getting replyed with betrayal, stealing, attempted murder and torture.
I thought it's an interesting topic to discuss since they are almost the same character in these story arcs and especially since tv Dwight is out of the story not having his proper set up for his upcoming comic part...this is where I'm going into the second part of the post.
I still think that tv Dwight was one of the only good parts of the Negan arc but he's very different compared to his comic part and here are the events compared to the comic:
-In the comics he's introduced killing a man that he doesn't even knew while on the tv show he attempted murder over a person who once saved him and his family trusting him and killed by accident another person.
-In the comics he didn't needed to be pushed by Sherry or Daryl or Sherry leaving in order to switch sides, while in the tv show it was the opposite of these situation since he switched sides couse he didn't had any other option.
-In the comics at the end of AOW he wanted to lead his people for a better future with Negan out of the picture, being part of the new world, while in the tv he just wanted to die or to find Sherry (and Daryl gave him what he wanted).
-By the end of the Negan arc comic Dwight established a close relationship with both Rick and Ezekiel earning their trust while in the tv show he didn't had interactions with these two or Michonne (the next big boss after Rick's death) but only with people that are still hating him by the time the war ended(Daryl, Tara, Rosita, Eugene and the Saviors).
It doesn't make sense for Michonne to put Dwight in charge of the Militia after he comes back in like 5 years since he had no interactions with the Survivors.
On the other side:
-Daryl and Michonne are long trusted frieds since year 1 of the apocalypse, with Daryl already having relationships with the characters (upcoming soldiers in the whisperer war).
-both comic Dwight and Daryl have authority and ruthlessness(characteristics lacking on tv Dwight).
-both comic Dwight and Daryl have military background (comic Dwight being and ex soldier and Daryl from Merle).
For me comic Dwight always felts like a copied version of Daryl since Daryl already had the signature items (the bike, the crossbow, the bike) during season 2B, months before comic Dwight was introduced.
That's why it's more natural for Daryl to play that comic part considering that Angela Kang is bringing his character back on track from the looks of it. Sorry Daryl haters, Dwight fans and hardcore comic fans but that's just the way it is.
We already know that Austin was not on set yet and they are on episode 10 now I guess, I pray to God for him not to go to Fear or to return with the Whisperers since I don't want another redemption arc for him, also he would steal the Whisperers spotlight (Alpha, Beta, Lydia).
Comic Dwight was so important couse Rick was not able being in action due to his handicaps during the whisperers arc so we got a pov character for that. Tv Rick dying makes Dwight kinda useless too now.
What I do want is a mini spin-off with him in Canada or so featuring snow since they teased they are working for a project on winter time and Dwight still being in the universe but not returning any time soon in TWD.
This way you can explain what he did during all these years and maybe ending it with him arriving at the Commonwelth becoming one of their trusted lieutenants and ultimately him returning in the original series around season 11 or so with the Commonwelth restarting a more complex relationship with Daryl now that they are both changed.
What do you think guys? Thanks for reading!
