I was in another post when I had a bit of an epiphany and thought it warranted it’s own post, it’s possible this is old news to some but I’ve never seen it mentioned so I thought I’d share.
Back in season 1 Robert and the small council are discussing Daenery’s rise to power in Essos and whether she should be assassinated, Ned Stark walks in, scolds the King and then resigns as Hand. At the time the scene seems to show Ned’s integrity, that he is prepared to stand up to and risk his friendship with the King over a point of honour and principle, that he refuses to resort to savagery, it’s a powerful scene.
There’s more to it though, Robert wants to kill Dany because she has a claim to the throne and, even though she’s no threat now, she might become one, we didn’t know it at the time but the exact same thing could be said about the boy Ned has been hiding for 15 years, Jon Snow.
Understanding this throws that scene into a whole new light, yes Ned is principled but Robert’s threats are landing very close to home, when Ned is defending Dany he’s also defending the boy he’s raised as his son, Ned’s still scared of what Robert would do if he ever found out the truth about Jon, that’s what makes Ned so determined to stand up to the King.
