By itself Season 1 was decent. I may be biased since I've adored this show and cast since day one. But if you consider this show as it's own piece in the zombie genre, it's gold.
Sure it had it's problems but it's biggest problem was being tied to the main show. The pilot pulled like six million viewers and then dropped off because a lot of TWD fans were apparently not into what it was trying to be. Not to mention this was peak TWD era. Expectations were extremely high.
So instead of the show starting off on it's own and growing a fanbase, it immediately got a bad reputation. The drop in viewers looked bad but it did appear to stabilize at 2 million viewers. Season three really was amazing storytelling and I believe more people would have started watching and growing the fanbase.
But it was too late and the money-eyed corporate idiots at AMC did what they do and destroyed it completely.
