I'm up to mid-season 6, and I'm still having trouble believing that walker blood doesn't infect the living who come into contact with it.
A bite is just a way to open the skin and infect the living with the active virus. If the blood with an active virus is being sprayed and leaked all over the face while you're fighting the walkers, bite or no bite, you can get infected. That was my understanding, and I guess the only one that made sense to me.
I've seen everyone's face spattered with blood time and time again, and there's no concern for whether or not it may have gotten into their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc. I mean you even see the characters cover themselves in walker blood and guts in the first few episodes of the series.
I even went down a rabbit hole wondering if their teeth or finger nails are the infected tissue in the same way that only active lesions can pass certain viruses in our reality.
Is it just as simple as only bites, not blood = infection?
