[Spoilers] How did Ellaria Sand take over Dorne?

Ellaria Sand starts the show as Prince Oberyn‘s mistress, with no formal position at Dornish court aside from being mother of Oberyn’s bastard daughters. She isn‘t said to be particularly good at political manipulation (most of her plans are rather dumb and fail, like the one to kidnap Myrcella). It also isn’t mentioned that Ellaria has any special influence at court, especially after the death of her lover.

So how in the world did she manage to pull off a coup and kill the Prince of Dorne (the Lord Paramount of one of the Seven Kingdoms) so easily? Ellaria has no army, only three assassins of dubious skill. She doesn’t even have a claim to the Dornish throne (she has no blood relation to the Martells and wasn’t even married to Oberyn). Ellaria has no allies at the time of her coup (her alliance with Daenerys comes later). She only has to kill 2 people (Prince Doran and his chief guard) and that’s it. She’s got Dorne.

The Iron Throne under Tommen/Cersei strangely doesn’t intervene, and lets Ellaria rule in Dorne for all of S6 (the coup happens in Ep1 and she’s still ruling when Lady Olenna and Varys come to Dorne in Ep10). I know Cersei had a lot to deal with in S6 with the Faith and the Tyrells, but really? Is it really like Cersei to let the woman that murdered her daughter rule one of the Seven Kingdoms independently for a whole year?
