I never found myself getting attached to the side and background characters until after Rick left the spotlight. Throughout season 10 I found that I've never been more excited for new episodes because there are so many different characters to develop and stories to cover.
Before, it was all just about one dude and his goal to unite people. Now we get to see the fruition of that unity without him taking away from their development as an independent family.
