And I’ve got to say, seasons 4 and 5 are nowhere near as terrible as I remember. Hear me out before you downvote:
Yes, seasons 1-3 are the best seasons and 4 and 5 are so markedly different that they should’ve basically been a new show. The core group had their personalities changed so heavily without any of the context needed to explain why, and the years of events that took place after the dam explosion were hand waved with one “You found us and brought us back” sentence by Strand.
Once you get over the lost potential due to moving away from Erickson’s story, what’s left in its place is actually an enjoyable watch (at least when binged). There are still some truly horrificly-written set-pieces (like parking the car so the Vultures can surround you with walkers, the Vultures as a group, the dirty woman as an antagonist who sneaks up on everyone with a growling walker, etc)., but when binge watching the show those things don’t dominate your focus like they do when waiting a week between episodes. Almost anything to do with John Dory, Sarah and Wendall, or Morgan and Grace was enjoyable or better, and any scene with Dwight or Strand or Daniel in general was a step above the rest.
Yes, there are individual moments or scenes that are unforgivably bad, and the way they handwaved all the events after the dam is even worse. But the show was surprisingly enjoyable to binge, since I remember hating almost every moment when watching it live.
