Gilligan Themes

Alright I’m proud of this one. So I noticed a theme in BCS and BB. A few clear messages are present to the audience:

  • don’t tell people what to do
  • don’t judge people
  • don’t talk down to people
  • forgive people for past mistakes

Let me elaborate. In BB Jesse harbours massive resentment to walt bcos walt is an asshole who orders around, patronises and reminds jesse of his past at every turn. Walt is the clear villain of the story and tho jesse is no hero, in their interactions its clear we should be rooting for jesse. By doing all these things, Walt is a bad person and causes suffering to jesse who, just like saul, always feels a need to prove himself to people and he hates that.

Saul/Jimmy. (I’ll use saul) Chuck is saul’s walt. In that saul looks up to chuck, wants chuck to like and respect him but he just won’t. Chuck instead patronises and crucially never let’s saul move on from his past. No matter what saul does, to chuck he’s a loser, a screw up. Its an incredibly harsh and cruel thing that causes them both so much pain.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Vince was maybe a younger brother in his life bcos he really seems to ‘get’ this theme and pushes it a lot. I know I somewhat relate. I love that BCS and BB show the pain and the cruelty that judgemental ppl inflict.
