Tale of Two Shows

Just discovered TWD on Netflix near Halloween and absolutely LOVE it. I've spent the past two months binge watching the show and recently caught up to the end of Season 10 (Episode 16).

As with any show, quality will inevitably decline from the shows highpoint. Notwithstanding, I still enjoyed the later seasons (though not obviously as much as the earlier years).

I almost feel as if you could divide the show into 2 shows. To me there are 3 points where you could say the series diverges from from it's original feeling.

  1. The end of Season 5: The show definitvely shows that these characters are staying in Alexandria. There's no longer a scavenger, on the run, living on the edge of the frontier, feel to the show. We can finally say that there is more to the show than the main group's survival.

  2. Jesus's first appearance: He says it himself "your world is about to get a whole lot bigger." The episode blows the lid off the show and is the beginning of a skew of new characters. Obviously they will have to make space to develop them.

  3. The Last Day on Earth: Despite many people's distaste for the cliffhanger ending I really enjoyed the episode and build up of dread and payoff we get with Negan's first appearance. Though future episodes couldn't match its intensity I still enjoyed the Savior's arc. Negan is a little over the top (I wish they grounded him a little more like the Governor) and the arc puts an end to the frontier feeling for good of the first few seasons.

What do you guys think?
