[EVERYTHING] A theory on the best way to survive the white walkers.

So in S1 E1, we see 3 rangers from Castle Black heading out beyond the wall. They meet White Walkers, 2 of the rangers are killed and the third drops to his knees in defeat. But... the third ranger SURVIVES. The Walkers spare him. This doesn't seem like the kind of thing the White Walkers would do; they're brutal killing machines.

We see this happen again in the series: in S2 E10, the Night's Watch are ambushed at The Fist Of The First Men. Samwell is abandoned by Edd and Grenn (who run away) leaving Samwell to cower behind a rock in fear. The White Walkers and their undead army find him... but spare him. Why have the WWs spared 2 men, when they're supposed to be on a crusade to kill everyone possible?

My theory is that when the children of the forest made the Walkers, they hard-coded commands into their brain. I suspect that the children of the forest weren't completely heartless; if the humans surrendered, then they would stop attacking. Maybe the WWs nature is to attack and kill if the enemy is fighting or retreating/running away, but to spare them if they surrender. Both Samwell and the ranger from the first episode both sank to their knees in defeat, effectively surrendering. So the best way to survive a White Walker is to yield to them.
