Travis has already lost his entire family and this has helped him become awakened to the reality of the apocalypse. Do you think it's necessary for Madison's own evolution to go through a similar process to Travis where she has to lose one of her own family? Especially if you consider Fear being about the formation of the villains, she needs that extra push if she really is intended to become Darth Rick.
I mean she clearly already has evolved to a certain extent - being willing to do whatever it takes to protect Alicia and Nick even if it means murder - but compared to Travis she still is able to maintain that same nurturing/compassionate side of her pre-apocalypse personality. She's his moral compass at this point and the only real source of stability he has left. Sooner or later she'll have to shred that part of herself somehow.
