So I'm rewatching The Expanse again for the first time since it initially aired. Partly because I got my wife into it and partly because I can watch it in its full HD glory now on a big TV as opposed to a tiny laptop screen after obtaining it through...ahem, other means.
It really strikes me now, halfway into season 3, just how good the show is at steadily raising the stakes and keeping that momentum going episode after episode. We all know how slowly the show started - it took at least 4-5 episodes for it to get interesting and most of the first season was worldbuilding and set up. Then in the beginning of the second season we start getting answers to the proto molecule mystery, with the tensions between earth and Mars rising, the situation on Ganymede etc. And it just keeps building episode after episode, each more intense than the last until it escalates into a full-blown war story.
And then Season 3 is legitimately a masterclass in TV making. Every episode is breathlessly paced, with big events and plot twists and character development and pretty much never letting up for a second.
I almost didn't appreciate this when I first watched it as I was viewing it week by week. Being able to binge it now is actually a much better experience and really makes you appreciate the craft and care that went into making the show.
