I have been rewatching the show and it’s interesting to see upon rewatch the changes Rick makes as a man and adapts to his surroundings. Truly one of the most well developed characters in any story.
Season 1: Still a guy trying to hold onto pieces of the past and taking his role as an officer seriously. Cares about protecting his family above all but essentially the same man he has always been before.
Season 2: Rick is still a man trying to live as kind as possible and is very conscientious about all his decisions. Although he does kill Shane and the two guys in a bar, he has to convince himself it’s right and still feels bad. All of his hard decisions way heavily on him.
Season 3: Rick is starting to embrace his role as a leader and doing what he needs to protect himself and his family, but retains his compassionate nature, not counting his short paranoia after Lori’s death. Still keeps his humanity.
Season 4: Most interesting season for Rick’s character. Begins feeling that the prison is safe and learns more about the the importance of mercy and peace from hershel which he takes to heart, but by the end of the season realizes that it is no longer an option and becomes the most brutal he has ever been in order to save Carl.
Season 5: Savage Rick at its finest. At this point rick only cares about survival and protecting his family, having no issues with killing those who threaten them and even distrusting and possibly harming those who attempt to be friendly . Once in Alexandria, Rick has trouble coping and remains convinced that a safe place no longer exists.
Season 6: Slowly coming around to a more civilized life once more, Rick becomes cocky that him and his group are the kings of the apocalypse and can easily take down any enemy.
Season 7: Rick at his lowest point. Rick finally realizes that there are greater threats than he could have imagined and for the first time finds himself no longer in a position of power, eventually resorting to drastic measures simply to get by.
Season 8: A culmination of several Ricks we had previously seen. We see the confident Rick convinced that they can beat the saviors in battle, the savage Rick determined to kill Negan at all costs, and eventually the diplomatic and merciful Rick from season 4 deciding to spare negan and realizing the steps that need to be taken to get back to civilization.
Season 9: Essentially the same as Rick at the end of season 8, but building upon his vision for civilization.
I can’t think of many other characters where a different version of the character in some way is present in almost every season, while also building upon the development from each of the previous ones, only making the character stronger the longer it goes. Long live Rick Grimes
