Just watched the episode last night and read a lot folks wondering why Negan wasn't smart enough to see through Dwight's ploy to have the doctor "removed". In my mind, the truth of the doctor's guilt is not the primary thing on Negan's mind. Negan may still suspect Dwight is lying and the doctor was innocent. But it doesn't matter because Negan has a more pressing need: to foster loyalty through fear. Everyone knows there was a conspiracy to free Darrel. That's a direct affront to Negan's leadership. It cannot go unresolved. Killing the doctor may have destroyed a valuable asset, but it served an even greater purpose: it demonstrated that NO ONE is irreplaceable and internal conspiracies against Negan will be met without mercy.
Negan took a page from Stalin's handbook. If your retribution is merciless and capricious, conspirators will think they have no room to maneuver and have no one to trust.
