edit: ok so yeah, i messed up once already with the tags, mod spanked... only one spoiler bracket this time. [it's just a theory on the show, i assume you've watched all episodes and read all books](#s "first, i've been away, and it looks like spoiler tags have changed... i'll try, but if i fk up, stop reading now lest i piss in your cheerios
second, i don't claim this as mine. i worked on it alone, then i posted it here last year and found others have thought very similar.
i mean WTF y'all, i was crushed to discover that l+r=j wasn't MY idea?!?! what do mean i'm not the only geek?
as the season opens i wanted to share it again and get feedback from fellow rabid fans... knowing gendry is returning makes me even more curious to find out if i'm right... anyway, i only babbled this long to so spoilers wouldn't show near the top... on with it
7/26 So here's my theory on sam, i've been working on this for awhile... as the series draws to an end, and story arcs are converging, earlier foreshadowing will start to pay off with developments.
i believe that when sam earns his valyrian link, he will discover that magic is reborn with the dragons, and he will light the dragonglass candles (this is already happening in the books) and learn magic that has been actively hidden and discouraged by the maesters.
and he's got heartsbane to experiment on.
i think sam will find the secret to forging new valyrian steel deep in the libraries of the citadel.... i'm willing to go all in on that bet
ok, here is where we have to bigly suspend disbelief, as our knowledge of science and metallurgy may not apply directly... so please try to be open minded (there be dragons for fks sake)
grrm has described valyrian as similar to damascus steel. i think that crushed dragonglass will be used, folding it into the metal and during the annealing or decarburation process, and there will be some kind of magic involved, magic that was reborn with the dragons. this would be some of the magic sam learns. he's always wanted to be a wizard.
dragonstone island is literally built on an island of dragonglass, so there is plenty of raw material, and it was built using old magic. dragon fire will be used to melt the steel, there are references to dragonsteel, and sam already suspects it's valyrian
i also hope this could be a reentry for gendry to the plot, he is a blacksmith, trained by tobho mott (in the books the smith that reforged ice), one of the men that knew how to reforge valyrian.
i've got a whole montage scene in my head, cue the inspirational music
sam and priests chanting some arcane spells, gendry swinging his hammer making the steel sing, drogon blasting fire, quenching the hot blades in crushed or molten dragon glass to temper it
cut to a scene handing out new swords to the armies, or at least heads of houses
the war to come is the real war, this would be a game changer in the wars against the white walkers. sam has been too central a character, and he hasn't paid off... i feel like when he does it has to be huge. samwell/grrm is the hero of the story!
my theory in a nutshell dragonfire + dragonglass + secret magic = new valyrian steel
also, remember back when sam discovered the dragonglass at the fists of men? there was a horn in that bundle... could it be... maybe... the jorumans horn of winter?
as i click submit, i fear the internet flames... bring it on, i've missed y'all")
