The Thick Of It: one of the most brilliantly consistent shows ever?

Armando Iannucci is now rightly well-known for Veep and films like Death of Stalin, but The Thick Of It is the show that I revisit most often.

It’s a brilliantly biting political comedy/satire with some of the most wonderfully inventive swearing of all time, mostly from the great Malcolm Tucker: see this compilation for a taste of it. It’s also surprisingly accurate as a depiction of some of the more awkward figures in british politics and how they try and fail to keep up with the real movers and shakers.

You can watch the whole series 4 or 5 times and still be finding new hilarious lines that you missed on a precious occasion because you were busy laughing (recent example; “he’s so old school he got his packed lunch nicked by Plato”).

What really got me on my most recent rewatch is how amazingly consistent the show is. It never dips in quality, and I genuinely would struggle to pick a favourite season because of how consistent it is. It’s usually a given that a tv show will drop off in quality in some point, perhaps after losing a crucial cast member (as in fact happened here, but they just pressed on and overcame it).

In case anyone hasn’t watched it yet, and if you hate getting into a show only for the inevitable slump to come along, this is definitely one to go for! I’m sure it’s widely praised on here so I can’t claim it’s underrated but its reputation is absolutely earned.
