Many people have said that the main characters are Jon Snow, Daenerys, Arya, Bran and Tyrion. Aside from Tyrion, I didn't find any of these "main narratives" gripping.
Out of these characters, I thought Jon had the closest to entertaining, supporting players, (really just Dolorous Edd) but could the others carry a show on their own? Bran had Meera, Howland and Hodoor but I was bored. Arya had assassin's, actresses and her own goonies, upon reflection I was mostly bored. Daenerys had a boy toy, a eunuch and a hair dresser, I was bored as hell.
I also resent to this day, Tyrion was taken out of the main action in Westeros and marooned in boring Mereen.
Does anyone think it is coincidental that the show lost some of it's magic when the above started to take center stage. Prior to Season 7, I felt like Tywin, Cersei, Joffrey, Lancel Olenna, Margaery, Loras, Tyrion, Sansa, Shae, Varys, Littlefinger, Ramsay and Roose had me on the edge of my seat. They were making something happen, they were watching something happen or something was happening to them.
I don't doubt GRRM intended for J/D/A/B/T to be the center pieces of the whole tale, but did he get carried away with his own supporting characters?
