If you rewatch the show many small details that you overlooked at first gain significance later on. One detail is the role of Ser Barristan. While I initially thought that he was just a side-character who made a somewhat short and insignificant appearance, in hindsight he was her best advisor and he was able to convince her. Once he was gone, his voice of reason was also gone and it clearly showed.

Here is an example for the opposite: Olenna also gave advice. It's exactly what caused the downfall. Notice that Barristan was one of these so called "clever men", while Olenna was in fact a conspirator and a poisoner. We only like her because she was good at roasting and because Joffrey was a cunt who deserved it.
