Holy shit, that was a lot of binging. Well I guess I’ll start with season 1. Right off the bat, I’ve never really watched an MA rated show, and I’m not used to realistic gore. Seeing the walkers in the first episode was surreal. I never even know there was a comic series when I started, so I had no clue if Rick was going to make it far at all.
Although the first episode was amazing, the best introduction they could have made, I didn’t understand what this show was going to be like until the 3rd one, when half the camp gets massacred. I expected people like Amy to be on the show long term, and for them to suddenly be ripped away was strange. I became engrossed in this fight for survival, them trying to figure out wtf was going on and how to fix it. I’ve heard that people don’t like the CDC episode, but personally I thought it was a great way to bring closure to the fact that this shit is long term. It’s not going away soon, and you’re going to have to fight every damn moment to survive.
Season 2: Fantastic season. I didn’t expect Daryl to be more mild and a group worker. We saw that he did truly start to care for not just himself, but others.
Rick becomes more hardened, and I was shocked that Dale and Andrea were the only ones who voted not to execute that kid locked up in the barn (Randall?). They started to become colder, and less forgiving than they were before, and it was difficult to see for me.
Season 3: Another solid season. Rick switches to a pack mentality, dead set against interacting with other people outside of the pack. Seeing him show little mercy was a little stunning, but sometimes understandable.
I liked Hershel’s development in this season too. In season 2 I went from liking him at first loathing him when he wanted to send Rick and his group away. It was really cool to see him grow into a figure of support for everyone, even Rick, to lean on. I almost felt like he was my own grandfather.
Michonne’s inability to communicate with her friends/allies was extremely frustrating. All she could say to Andrea when she said they had to get out was “It’s not safe”. Girl, why don’t ya tell her you saw fresh blood on the cars that the Governor recently delivered? It’s the Idiot plot I guess.
When Lori died when T dog died, I was like oh shit...anyone can die. People still aren’t safe. It felt like they were weaning down the characters to the essential group.
The Governor is an intriguing character, charismatic leader disguised as an angel of light, but also coming from personal tragedy. He is skillful at manipulation and deceit. Andrea was just frustrating. She could have killed him when she had the chance!!!
Man, Merle is a fucking asshole. But really badass of Glenn to come from a situation where he’s tied up to a chair to killing the Walker with the chair, then breaking a waker’s arm bone to use as a weapon? Badass! This is when I first thought, “Wow, Glenn is a fucking survivor, just like Rick”. I got pretty pissed when Daryl ran off with Merle, leaving his group, after when Merle did to Glenn and Maggie. That was a hard betrayal, but he kinda redeemed himself.
The finale was super disappointing at the time, felt really anticlimactic. I wanted to see the Governor die. Andrea died in the dumbest way too. She should have gone out by the governor’s own hand/escaped to die in battle protecting the prison.
Season 4: I loved seeing that they had started to build a community, with a library, farm, school... finally, they were getting stronger. But then shit hits the fan after a virus, and then the Governor comes back. I liked how they did it tbh, we got to see the Governor find Tara and her family, hook up, act as a father figure, and generally a good guy. But then we remember why we hate him so much, when he uses his ruthlessness to get rid of “threats” to group, and goes back to the prison. It was always going to end this way.
Watching Rick plead with the Governor was heartbreaking. Andrew has always proven he’s such a great actor, it’s like he’s actually in that situation IRL. I saw Hershel’s death coming all season, honestly just glad he made it that far. What really hurt was that he didn’t just get a decapitation, he crawled on the ground trying to get to safety before getting hacked at multiple times. It was dark shit.
Now they’re all separated and back to square 1. FUCK. It was such a shocker to see Lizzie go full crazy and kill her sister. Didn’t see that coming... look at the flowers....
Carol grew from a scared, abused and lonely woman to a hardened and determined person. Killing David and Tyreese’s white girlfriend was definitely wrong and unjustified. But it was hard to see her develop into that, molded by the hard cold reality of the world.
I kinda thought Beth was acting super childish, wanting to get some fucking alcohol when they should be trying to get their shit together.
I was so fucking relieved to have Glenn find Maggie again. Their relationship meant a lot to me, because it was so relatable. I wanted them to survive the whole way with Rick and eventually settle down and help rebuild society.
One final note is how Rick is a goddamn badass. Can’t imagine having to see a guy trying to rape your son and threading to rape michonne before killing you all. But he’s a survivor, and did what he had to do to keep him and his family safe, ripping the Claimer’s fucking throat out
Season 5: Holy fucking fireballs, that first episode. Realizing that they were cannibals and seeing all the hung up human flesh was absolutely mortifying. And seeing those guys getting their throats slit out like animals? Gave me chills. So glad to see Glenn not get slit last second. Carol was badass, Rick was a badass, perfect episode.
I was really sad to see Bob go, I liked him and felt bad for Sasha, but at least he got the last laugh on those smug cannibal bastards. The acting by his actor was really good.
Gabriel sucks dick.
Abe’s way with language is hilarious, and good comedy relief.
I enjoyed the rest of the season, but not much to say about it tbh.
Season 6: I was super happy to see that they started to get their shit together. Rick and Michonne hooked up, there was some peace, etc. Then everything goes to shit again. Watching Eugene bit off Dwight’s dick was hilarious and amazing.
I’m going to talk about the season finale and season 7 episode 1 as the same episode.
Watching the RV getting blocked again and again was frustrating, and I started to feel this sense of despair. That only increased when we got to the woods. The whistles were truly frightening. Then... Negan. Watching him kill Abraham was gut wrenching. At least he went out like a badass, but it was super hard to watch. I thought it was going to be Daryl.
Then... Glenn. Some of the deaths in the show really affected me before. Dale was hard, Tyreese was hard, T Dog was hard, but this? Not only him dying but the way he did it, gasping and gurgling, in the shape he was in, Maggie’s cries of anguish, his final words. My heart just sank. The rest of the episode was no better, Rick basically got tamed by Negan and lost all of his confidence, and realized that he was truly powerless. Watching him sob when he was about to cut off Carl’s arm had me shaking.
As soon as the episode was over, I knew I wouldn’t feel the same about this show ever again. Maybe my expectations were wrong from earlier but, this is not how I thought shit was going to go. I felt pretty hopeless about the story. Like I truly realized, a happy ending is NOT happening. So I started to question what the point is to continue watching, if I know most of them are gonna get killed off anyway? I couldn’t watch more.
After that I spoiled myself on stuff after that. I learned that Carl dies in season 8. What the fuck? Like ok, the show is hopeless at this point. When I watched season 1, it looked like it was going to be a struggle for survival for Carl, for a better future. But we’re just killing off all the goddamn OGs!
It looks like all the rest is just clan wars and shit. This is unrecognizable from the TWD I started on. Honestly really disappointed. I guess I’ll just have to make up my own head canon. Huge shame because the actors poured their best into their work. Too bad the writing failed them.
