I have only watched through Season 7, waiting for Season 8 on Netflix. I’ve re-watched the series twice now, and I have some thoughts on Daryl. Some people don’t like him, but I think there is more there than people give credit.
First, he’s cool because he rides.
Second, as my title implies, he is the Hidden Hero of the series. Through the seasons, his life before things changed is revealed, and it was dark. Lonely. Aimless. He fits better in the new world. Despite that, or because of it, Daryl learns to be a productive part of a “functional” community, probably better than he ever has.
Third, he experiences great losses. First, the same loss everyone has with the new world. Then he is separated from Merle on the roof top in ATL. He is left with people he doesn’t relate to. Then he loses Sophia, which begins his more intimate relationship with Carol. He is reunited with Merle, only to realize his growth and inability to relate to his brother. Then he loses Merle due to a last minute act of sacrifice and redemption: a death that takes away the chance for a real relationship with Merle due to his chance of heart. Paradoxical. He loses Beth at Grady Hospital. He is separated from Carol numerous times. Then he causes, or at least contributes to Glenn’s death. His character changes because of his extreme losses. And his past does not give him the ability to evolve further.
I am disappointed in the course the character is going, but it is understandable. He is a Hidden Hero of the show. And he rides.
