I was going through Hulu by network to try and find some new shows for the husband and I to watch. We're both fans of Adventure Time and I had heard good things about Over the Garden Wall when it first came out, so I decided to give it a try.
Holy shit. It's so good.
The references and homages, the darker content mixed with surreal humor, the cute design used to convey some truly horrible imagery, the lack of definitive explanation...amazing! And the songs are well-placed and either really cute or very fitting and poetic.
I've already re-watched it on my own and will probably do so again in the autumn.
I have no idea how an actual child would react to something like this. But CN had a bit of a phase where some of their shows were really more for teens than children - AT, Regular Show, Steven Universe, things like that.
The only bad aspect was the fact that I couldn't recognize my dear Tim Curry's voice. Auntie Whispers was apparently his first role after he suffered a stroke a few years ago and that really comes through in his voice. I had no idea it was him until I was doing my post-show analysis/research flurry online.
